Durable Medical Equipment

Durable Medical Equipment (DME) includes medical devices and supplies that are ordered by a healthcare provider for long-term or repeated use at home. DME helps support recovery, manage chronic conditions, and improve safety and mobility.

• Home Safety Equipment: Bed rails, shower chairs, commodes
• Orthopedic Supports: Braces, splints, boots
• Respiratory Equipment: Oxygen tanks, CPAP/BiPAP machines, nebulizers

Step 1: Provider Evaluation

Your healthcare provider will assess your condition and determine if DME is medically necessary. They will provide a prescription or order for the equipment.

Step 2: Insurance Authorization

• If you have Medicare, Medicaid, or private insurance, prior authorization may be required.
• You may be responsible for a co-pay or deductible, depending on your plan.
• Utah Medicaid and most private insurers follow DME authorization policies.

Step 3: Choose a DME Supplier

Your provider may refer you to a local DME company or you can choose one that's in-network with your insurance.
