Minuteman® Spinal Procedure
Minimally invasive spinal stabilization and fusion
What is the Minuteman® Spinal Procedure?
The Minuteman® Procedure is a minimally invasive spinal stabilization and fusion technique designed to treat lower back pain caused by conditions like spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, or degenerative disc disease. This procedure uses the Minuteman® implant, a device that stabilizes the spine by connecting two vertebrae together from a lateral (side) approach without the need for large incisions or open surgery.
It is a safe, effective alternative to traditional spinal fusion surgery — with smaller incisions, less recovery time, and faster pain relief.
Why is the Minuteman® Procedure Recommended?
Your provider may recommend the Minuteman® Procedure if you have:
- Lumbar spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal causing nerve compression)
- Spondylolisthesis (slippage of one vertebra over another)
- Degenerative disc disease with instability
- Chronic low back and leg pain that has not improved with conservative treatments like physical therapy, medications, or injections
The Minuteman® implant provides stability and fusion to the affected spinal segment, relieving pressure on nerves and reducing pain.
How is the Procedure Performed?
The procedure is performed under light sedation and local anesthesia in an outpatient setting.
- A small incision is made on the side of the body, near the targeted vertebrae.
- Using fluoroscopic (live X-ray) guidance, a specialized tube is placed to access the spine.
- The Minuteman® implant (a titanium device) is inserted between the vertebrae and secured into place.
- Bone graft material is added to encourage fusion between the vertebrae over time.
- The procedure typically takes about 30–60 minutes, and patients are usually discharged the same day.
What Should I Expect After the Procedure?
- You may experience mild soreness at the incision site, which generally improves within a few days.
- Most patients walk immediately after the procedure and return to light activities within a few days.
- Full fusion and long-term stabilization may take several months as the bone graft material helps the vertebrae grow together.
- Your provider may recommend light physical therapy to optimize your recovery.
- Many patients experience significant reduction in back and leg pain within days to weeks after the procedure.
Are There Risks or Side Effects?
The Minuteman® Procedure is generally very safe. Rare potential risks include:
- Infection at the surgical site
- Implant movement or failure (very rare)
- Nerve irritation (temporary)
- Bleeding or hematoma formation
- Incomplete fusion requiring additional treatment (rare)
