Qutenza
Prescription-strength topical treatment for nerve pain
What is Qutenza?
Qutenza is a prescription-strength topical patch that contains capsaicin 8%, a natural compound derived from chili peppers. It is used to treat nerve (neuropathic) pain by reducing the ability of pain nerves in the skin to send pain signals to the brain.
Approved Uses
Qutenza is FDA-approved for the treatment of:
- Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN): nerve pain following shingles
- Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (feet)
- Neuropathic pain associated with peripheral nerve injury
Your healthcare provider may also use Qutenza for other types of localized nerve pain.
How Does Qutenza Work?
Capsaicin in high concentrations overstimulates the pain receptors in the skin, leading to a temporary reduction in their ability to send pain signals. Over time, this results in decreased pain sensitivity in the treated area.
What to Expect During Treatment
Application:
- The patch is applied by a healthcare professional only in a clinical setting.
- The area to be treated is cleaned and possibly numbed with a topical anesthetic before the patch is applied.
- The patch is left in place for:
- 60 minutes for most areas (e.g., feet)
- 30 minutes for smaller or more sensitive areas (e.g., upper arms)
Sensation During Application:
- A burning, tingling, or warming feeling is common during and shortly after treatment.
- Cooling packs may be used during or after treatment to reduce discomfort.
After the Procedure
What to Expect:
- Skin may appear red and feel sore or sensitive for a few days.
- Pain relief typically begins within 1 to 2 weeks and can last up to 3 months or more.
- Treated skin may feel numb or different to the touch.
Activity:
- You can go home the same day and return to normal activities.
- Avoid exposing the treated area to heat (e.g., hot baths or heating pads) for a few days.
Safety and Side Effects
Common Side Effects:
- Temporary redness, burning, or stinging at the application site
- Itching or swelling
- Increased sensitivity in the treated area
Rare Side Effects:
- Blisters or skin irritation
- Increased pain shortly after treatment (usually resolves within days)
Important Reminders
- Qutenza must be applied by a trained provider in a clinical setting.
- It is not for home use.
