Sacroiliac Joint Injection

Targeted treatment for SI joint pain and dysfunction

What Is the SI Joint?

The sacroiliac (SI) joints are located where the spine meets the pelvis, connecting the sacrum to the iliac bones. These joints help transfer weight between the upper body and legs.

What Is an SI Joint Injection?

An SI joint injection is a procedure that delivers local anesthetic and/or steroid medication directly into the joint to:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Relieve pain
  • Confirm whether the SI joint is the source of your pain

Reasons for the Injection

  • SI joint dysfunction or arthritis
  • Low back pain that radiates to the hip, buttock, or thigh
  • Pregnancy-related SI joint pain
  • Post-traumatic or degenerative joint changes

Before the Procedure

  • Fasting: You may be asked to avoid food or drink for several hours before.
  • Medications: Discuss blood thinners or diabetes medications with your provider.
  • Transportation: Arrange for someone to drive you home.

During the Procedure

  • You will lie on your stomach.
  • The skin is cleaned and numbed with local anesthetic.
  • Using fluoroscopy (X-ray) or ultrasound, a needle is guided into the SI joint.
  • Medication is injected directly into the joint space.
  • The entire procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes.

After the Injection

What to Expect:

  • You may feel immediate relief from the local anesthetic, which wears off in a few hours.
  • Steroid medication may take up to 14 days to reduce inflammation and pain.
  • Some soreness at the injection site is normal.

Activity:

  • Avoid heavy lifting or intense activity for the first 24–48 hours.
  • Resume normal activity gradually as tolerated.
  • Track your pain levels over the next few days.
